The Azores is one of those destinations that no one is quite sure exactly where it is - except for transatlantic sailors, who stop off en route to America. Almost in the middle of the Atlantic, 950 miles west of Lisbon, this Portuguese archipelago consists of nine volcanic islands spread across 373 miles. Each island is very different: some are mountainous; others are hilly and sparkling lakes in extinct volcano craters. The annual average temperature is 22ºC. The Azores Golf Islands belongs to VerdeGolf, SA and is located on the island of São Miguel. It is home to both the Batalha Golf Course and Furnas Golf Course. The other golf course is in Terceira Island. The Furnas Golf Course: was the first nine golf course in the Azores, and was built in São Miguel Island, in Furnas village. The first nine holes of the course were laid out by Mackenzie Ross, in 1936. The course was extended in 1992, and now boasts eighteen magnificent holes and a warm British style clubhouse. Batalha Golf Course: was designed by Cameron Powell in 1986 and it offers twenty seven holes of golf laid out over 120 ha. This facility opened to the public in 1993 and its sumptuous Clubhouse offers a unique setting for weddings and other banqueting events for up to 300 pax.
